“The Transformation”
Chapter 9
With Paul regrouped with his friends, together they travelled to the location of Clyde. Along the way, Clementine grabbed the things she had dropped earlier. Paul noticed that something is off with Amber and went to speak with her. For 3500 steps, he spoke to her regarding her sorrows and received little response. Paul fell beside Clementine to converse.
Paul: Amber isn’t doing too well. Did they get to you too?
Clem: No.
Reminiscing on what happened at the cabin in the woods, Clementine decided to expand on what happened.
Clem: A man took me to his room but Amber offered herself in my place. He did to her what he was going to do to me.
Paul: So she protected you. Clementine, you have made good friends. It may take some time for her to get pass what has happened. In the meantime, you should talk to her. Only you can bring her back.
Clem: Why me?
Paul: Aren’t you the one she suffered for? If she cared enough to go through hell you should let her know you appreciate her.
Clementine remembered that Paul was bitten, twice. Each which could easily be concealed and yet he confessed. Clementine remembered again the decision she made with Lee. She shot him before he turned and this time around it will be much easier to do, but still a hard action.
Clem: What should we do?
Paul: we wait. Right now I’m feeling fine. When the time comes, I’ll leave that decision to you.
Clementine nodded. She and Paul got along well and knowing that his death-clock drew near made her sad. Paul yet smiled and looked on ahead.
Paul: I don’t have that much time and I hate to die with regrets. There is a promise I made to you and haven’t kept.
With all of the promises made to Clementine and were broken, she had a hard time deciphering which one.
Clem: Which one?
Paul: When we first met I offered to be your traveling school. I may not have much time left, but I would rather die upholding my promises.
With everything that has happened, especially with losing Alvin Jr., Clementine had no interest in gaining an education. Having Alvin Jr. returned to her is her focus.
Clem: No.
Without warning, Paul reached into Clementine’s arms and grabbed her Bible.
Clem: That’s mine! Give it back.
All while ignoring Clementine, Paul analyzed the cover, spiral, and first few pages of the book.
Paul: Perfect. I’m sorry, this is my favorite book. I’ll give it back, I just want to read to you a few verses.
Paul flipped through the books of the Bible and skimmed passages in the New Testament.
Paul: Here we are. These two verses puts a smile even on a dying man’s face. They say, ‘In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.’
After reading the passages, Paul closed the Bible and handed it back to Clementine.
Paul: That was the book of John chapter 14. I taught theology in a religious college in the state of Alabama. We had a school down there for bright students like you. Before I die, I want to give you as much knowledge as I can. Clementine, before I leave this place you will believe there is salvation after death.
Clementine paused a moment to ponder her response. Paul was dying after all and this was his dying wish. Before any words could escape her lips Paul grabbed her shoulders. When Clementine looked up Paul was looking straight ahead in fear. Clementine followed his eyes and saw the armed survivors ahead of them.
Looking behind her Clementine saw Amber slide behind a tree. Paul and Clementine copied her strategy. They hid behind trees that were next to each other. Out of the clutter in her hands, Clementine pulled out a knife, the same she claimed after killing Alan.
Clementine turns to Paul and shows him the knife signifying she is ready for an assult. Paul shook his head back-and-forth and mouthed ‘Let them pass’. After a brief second of mulling it over, Clementine chose the hard way. Clementine peaked out too spy on her prey to find no one. This puzzled Clementine and then she heard an unfamiliar voice behind her.
Stranger: Drop it.
Clementine dropped the knife in the grass and turned around. The woman standing before her aimed a pistol at her head. Her friend came from behind her aiming a pistol at Paul’s head. Though being the captive, Clementine asked the first question.
Clem: I’m the one pointing the gun. I’ll ask the questions.
Stranger 2: Hey, Brandy, they’re not with them. We should keep moving.
Brandy gave her friend a dirty glance while her back was turned to her. Regardless, Brandy responded to her suggestion.
Brandy: I know! But we can still take their stuff before we let them go.
Brandy smiled and directed her words toward Clementine.
Brandy: That’s fair isn’t it? Your lives for your things.
Clementine did not like that offer and her facial expression showed it. Amber creped her way behind Brandy. Clementine noticed but did not give Amber a second more attention as to not give her away. Clementine looked up at Brandy and offered her the same deal.
Clem: Drop your guns and walk away. If you do that we’ll let you live.
Brandy: Who do you think you are? I could shoot you anytime I wanted.
Amber pulled out her gun and aimed next to Brandy’s head. Before Brandy knew what happened, Amber pulled the trigger. The bullet went past Brandy’s head not touching even a hair. The roaring blast of a pistol caused Brandy to drop her weapon and grab her tone deaf ear. Clementine quickly recovered the weapon. Amber aimed her gun at the woman who held Paul at gunpoint and Clementine took Brandy hostage.
Clem: Let him go!
The stranger holding Paul at gunpoint didn’t say a word. Her hand shook and her eyes were glued to the barrel of the gun being pointed at her.
Brandy: Nichola, drop the gun.
Nichola: If I let him go then they’ll kill us.
Brandy looked over to Clementine and she caught her glance.
Brandy: If she lets him go, do you promise to let us go our separate ways?
Clementine did not have much time to answer. Walkers were approaching. If she let them go, they could pose as a problem later. But if she decided to kill them, the scuffle would cause a commotion putting her own group in danger. Within few seconds, a decision had been made.
Clem: Amber, we’re letting them go.
Amber: They’ll just get in our way again.
Clem: We don’t have any choice.
Despite Clementine’s decision, Amber took aim.
Clem & Brandy: No!
While Clementine was distracted with Amber’s actions, Brandy shoved her to the ground and snatched her gun back. She aimed at Amber, but was too late. Amber shot off a round. In the same instant, Nichola pulled the trigger at her hostage.
Brandy looked over to her friend to find her still standing. Behind Nichola a Walker five few feet away from her fell. Even Paul avoided death. As Nichola was distracted by the barrel of Amber’s gun, Paul slipped behind Nichola. Paul snatched the gun in Nichola hands and pointed it toward her chest as she turned around to see who took her gun.
Brandy: Nichola, are you okay?
Nichola: No, but I’m alive.
Amber: This is your last warning. Drop your gun and go. Amber spoke with irritation.
Her pointer finger caressed the trigger of her pistol. Brandy stared into Amber’s eyes and knew just how serious she is. Brandy dropped her gun and Clementine reclaimed it. Nichola turned to speak with Amber.
Nichola: How are we supposed to make it out of here without our guns?
Amber: Not our problem.
Clementine remained quiet concerning Amber’s decision. The gunfire and drama drew more than a dozen Walkers. They were closing in. Amber’s patience dwindled as well.
Amber: Go or I’ll shot! Three seconds. Three…
Fading in through the distance were the faint sound of dogs barking.
Brandy: It’s them.
Brandy and Nichola looked at each other with terror in each one’s eyes. Without any further warning, they ran. They shoved Walkers and maneuvered their way around Walkers to make a swift escape. Clementine looked to Paul and then to Amber.
Paul: What was that about?
Clementine didn’t answer right away. The sound of the dogs were getting louder and Walkers had them surrounded. Clementine turned in Amber’s direction to find a Walker approaching her from behind.
Clem: Watch out!
While taking deep breaths and with one eye squinted, Clementine aimed her gun and shot the Walker approaching Amber from behind. Amber flinched at the gunshot and nothing more.
Amber: Clem. Paul. Get behind me. We’re shooting our way out of here.
Clementine and Paul obeyed the order. The three rallied in a circle with their backs to each other. The Walkers drew closer and the barking grew louder. Clementine wasted no ammo. Taking her time, Clementine made each bullet a headshot. The Walkers posed little threat. The woods they walked across is not heavily populated with the living dead. The shots fired drew a ratio of 0.2 Walkers per kill. Clementine made quick work of the Walkers approaching her, as did her allies.
Paul: I’m empty.
Clem: I have extra ammo in the diaper bag.
Amber slightly turned her head over to Clementine.
Amber: Hurry, I only have two shots.
Clem: Look out!
Amber directed her focus onto the Walkers before her and pulled the trigger in the mouth of a Walker the wandered too close.
Amber: One shot left!
Clementine dug inside the diaper bag sorting through the various things within to find ammo. Taking her time, Clementine made every shot a headshot. The Walkers posed little threat.
The area was not heavily populated with the living dead. The shots fired drew a ratio of 0.2 Walkers per kill. Clementine made quick work of the Walkers approaching her, as did her allies.

Clementine: I have more in the diaper bag.
Amber slightly turned her head to Clementine.
Amber: Hurry, I only have two shots.
Clementine: Look out.
Amber directed her attention to the Walkers before her and put a bullet in the mouth of one that got too close.
Amber: One shot.
Clementine dug inside the diaper bag sorting through the various things within to find the ammo.
Paul: Hurry!
She was running out of time. Deep inside the diaper bag, Clementine found a loaded magazine. Amber fired her last round. Clementine handed the mag to Paul and immediately dug back inside the diaper bag. Clementine reached down until she pulled out another. Walkers were approaching her. Before defending herself, Clementine gave Amber her rounds. Picking up her gun and aiming for between the face, Clementine fired a shot at a Walker in front of her. As soon as it feel the one behind it was revealed. Clementine fired at it too, but heard a click. In the midst of deciding whether to search for ammo or call for help. Paul shot the Walker almost a foot away from Clementine’s face. Now out of danger, Clementine reloaded her gun.
Amber: We need to move.
The barking was much more clear. And without the constant hum of many Walkers voices were also audible.
Stranger: There’s some asshole’s over here!
Amber stop him before anymore words could come from his mouth. The stranger died by a bullet going through his forehead.
Amber: This way.
Amber ran in the same direction Brandy and Nichola led.
Escape seemed futile. The dogs chasing them were closing in. There owners not too far behind. Despite her efforts. Clementine fell behind. Several dogs on her tail.
Brady: Nicky, hurry up.
Nichola: I am!
Clementine could hear them talking to her left. Though she could not see them she ran in their direction. Within seconds, she could see them crossing a river. Clementine rushed in their direction. Upon reach them she ran past them hoping the dogs would attack them instead.
Brady: Dammit!
The dogs passed Brady and Nichola and lunged at Clementine. She fell to the ground and curled into a ball.
Paul: Clementine!
Cried Paul. He and Amber made off into Clementine’s direction.
The dogs bit Clementine where they could. However, because of her odd position, they could not get a good bite out of her.
One by one the dogs squealed in pain. Clementine lifted her head enough to hear a blade being thrust in and out of the dogs. The biting stopped. Clementine looked up to see Brandy holding a bloody knife.
Paul: Clementine!
Paul ran over to Clementine and glided to his knees.
Paul: Are you alright?
Before she could answer shots were fired in their direction.
Brandy: Let go!
Nichola followed after Brandy headed deeper into the woods.
Amber: Follow them!
Cried Amber who previously stood quiet in the background.
Clementine grabbed her bag and obeyed orders. However, Paul struggled to get to his feet. With everything he has, he thrust himself forward managing to fall on his hands and feet. Kicking the ground behind him Paul makes a run for it narrowly escaping death.
Everyone ran as fast as they could. When they grew tired, the kept running for the fear of death. Despite how much they ran, dogs could be heard barking from a distance.
